sharam o haya
sharam o haya, ame nue, hamburg, 2019 - in their solo exhibition at ame nue, Hamburg, rah naqvi treads and pokes at the definition of femininity and gendered expression across the south asian muslim female diaspora. combining traditional techniques of painting and embroidery, rah unpacks their relationship to femininity, cultural conditions, morality, and virtue signaling. 'sharam o haya' translated would refer to modesty, shame, and reserve; a phrase naqvi grew up hearing often. rah dissects these moral codes of conduct for the female bodied individual that become sort of hand-books teaching them how to become 'good subservient women'.
