queer choir amsterdam

during the 2021 offspring exhibition, naqvi presented a collaborative time-based musical intervention consisting of songs written by the artist and performed by the queer choir amsterdam. the queer choir was started by mylou oord, shreya de souza and rah naqvi as a community-oriented, care-based program that stems from the dire need for brave spaces of expression outside nightlife for the queer community. queer choir amsterdam brought together in safety and solidarity twenty performers through an open call, to create and amplify narratives themed around politics, power, and most importantly, queer joy. individual, untrained voices form a medley that then illustrates the content of the songs. the choir is now under the guidance of shreya de souza, mylou oord, and vera morais, among many others who nurture it to this day.

some of the songs written by rah for the choir are ‘burn buildings down’, ‘mermaid orgies’, and ‘skin hunger’. the queer choir amsterdam is directed and conducted by Vera Morais.
